Oh the Shame!

So I've been busy as a Bombus preparing data management for the National Park Service Centennial BioBlitzes. The other Centennial Data Rangers (@geobudde, @biogeek5 , @alliepetersen , @kellycoy) and I have been working closely with @loarie , @carrieseltzer , and @tiwane to get things ready for the bioblitzes happening this year, and especially for the big week of May 16-22.

One of the projects we've set up is the NPS Servicewide project for tracking observations across the whole NPS for the whole of 2016.

I decided to check out the leaderboard to see who's made the most observations in the NPS for 2016 and started scrolling to find my username... and scrolling, and scrolling, and scrolling until I finally found it... in position #397!?!?

NPS BioBlitz 2016 leaderboard

This is a sad state of affairs and completely unacceptable.

I'm putting the iNaturalist community on notice to watch their backs, because I'm coming for you when it comes to observations in national parks! So, watch out @flygrl67 - you're next and @silversea_starsong , it may take me while to catch you, but I'm game for trying!

I'm #63. I need to up my game too! But I know @reallifeecology is going to give everyone a run for their money because he's coming to help in DC!

@carrieseltzer - you're almost at 100 observations for the NPS!

@danielgeorge You're #21
@harpomark You're #44

I'll be in Orange county after May so my observation total probably won't change from then on. That gives you a fixed target to work on :)

@silversea_starsong OC - my old stomping grounds. Glad to hear you'll be parking for a little bit to let the rest of us catch up! ;)

I have many more NPS images I've never posted.... I simply do not have enough time to put into iNat as I would like. Pity... Thanks for reminding me, though!

@flygrl67 Oh no! Did I just encourage you to pummel me?

Posted by forester93 over 8 years ago

Maybe....... ;-)

Haha! I smell competition. Wonderful, beautiful competition. :)

This will all set the bar for the TX bioblitz in the Big Thicket in October. I foresee smoking cameras! ;)

@sambiology I sense a late-in-the-year rush to the top of the charts!

I'll be blitzing in DC parks next week, hitting Colorado National Monument in June, and trying to get to Rocky Mountain National Park at least a few times this summer, but that might not be enough...

Posted by forester93 over 8 years ago

Ack! I've fallen to #425 by just sitting still. Itching to get out to DC and make progress.

@juddpatterson You're >500, but when you blitz in Biscayne NP this week, you're going to shoot past me!

Posted by forester93 over 8 years ago

You better get going @forester93. I shot up to #256 with a little lunch time adventuring. It sure is nice to have a national park unit right outside the office!

Posted by juddpatterson over 8 years ago

Curses! I need to do a detail at a park...

Posted by forester93 over 8 years ago

My fingers are numb from some serious BioBitz action in Kings Mountain National Military Park. I have now reached #17 and there is room to grow if I can visit the South Florida parks. How many mosquito observations do you think I can make???

Posted by juddpatterson over 8 years ago

Wear short sleeves, stand near a damp creek, and you'll double the bioblitz total with just mosquitos...

Posted by silversea_starsong over 8 years ago

I don't envy you those mosquito observations, Judd. Well done on the push to #17! Probably time for a reassessment of where NPS folk (that I know) stand...

@juddpatterson - #17
@danielgeorge - #22
@eraskin - #60
@harpomark - #61 - you and @eraskin are tied at 154 observations
@carrieseltzer - #88 - not officially NPS, but we adopted her, 'cause she kicks a$$ at National Geographic to make bioblitz happen
@ewrubel - #133
@gmsanders - #203
@forester93 - #329 - still pathetic, but not quite as pathetic as I used to be
@tomphilippi - #386

There are other NPS folks on iNat, but I just haven't met all of you yet. Looking forward to meeting more of you as we continue to use iNaturalist to record life in our parks.

@forester93 , you're beating me on identifications, though. Need to get busy cleaning up bioblitz observations when I get back to the office next week.

@forester93 -- Great interest @CABR for BlitzInABox for future year followup, and maybe individual visitor activity.
