Grasslands on east side of Sevilleta NWR, Socorro Co., New Mexico, USA. In flower (2 photos) and habitat (1 photo).
Thanks to botanists Bob Sivinski and Ken Heil for the species ID. Ken suggested the subspecies is E. i. var. dasyacanthus. The species was previously included at different times in the genera Echinocactus. Neolloydia, Sclerocactus, and Pediocactus.
Also called early-bloomer or pineapple cactus.
