Description

One of my favorite places to fish is on the Kasilof River. During this time of year, the most common type of fish you will catch is the Coho Salmon which is more commonly known as the Silver Salmon. Silver salmon are used for sport and subsistence fishing. Lots of locals catch them and use their meat for canning, smoking, or just cooking the fillets. The eggs are also helpful as you can use salmon eggs as bait during certain times of the year. Adult Silver salmon can range in size but most are commonly caught around 8-12 pounds.

COHA and fox squirrel
The COHA was pouncing on the squirrel, not with the intent of hunting. Neither were vocalizing. COHA went down to the ground where the squirrel was, then went back up to the wire. The squirrel climbed up to the wire opposite the COHA and (belive it or not!) jumped over ONTO the COHA! They both wnet in circles back down to the ground, and the COHA again went chasing the squirrel. The alternated this activity!
Sorry, terrible pics, but that's what I witnessed this morning!

Description

A friend of mine had set his backpack down on the beach while he went swimming in the ocean. Those of us still on the beach saw a huge baboon walking towards us. We all took a few steps back, but the monkey went straight for the backpack and started rustling through its contents. One of my professors through his flip-flops at it, but the baboon did not leave. Eventually, it dragged the pack up to the top of the sand dune. None of us were sure what to do to recover the bag. Suddenly, out of nowhere, an ostrich came running straight at the baboon (http://www.inaturalist.org/observations/1198222). The baboon took off running down the beach, and the ostrich simply turned around and walked away.

Video

An unusual scene captured here (unusual for this part of the country anyway!). What appears to be our resident puma passing within about 15' of a female moose that has been in the area since late November. The cat can be heard drinking from the perennial spring flowing through this ravine location. Video clips within a minute or two show the moose not appearing too agitated before ambling off the other direction. 10-15mph prevailing west wind at this day/time would have taken any moose scent away from the cat's direction of travel, although winds/air movement down in these deep ravines are often more variable than in the nearby "open country."
