Description
Sundew, Drosera brevifolia, at Bennett Place historical site, Durham NC. This is a rare plant in the NC Piedmont. Friends, members of the Duke Natural History Society, had read of old records for this plant at Bennett Place in Durham. I believe they said it was one of the few, or only, records for Durham County. We looked near some railroad tracks, where accounts mentioned it, but could not find any suitable habitat--that was all dense woodland and brush. A sharp-eyed graduate student finally found several plants in the lawn to the northeast (?) of the visitors center. It was in little bare patches of clay rich soil (hardpan, I guess) among clumps of grass. Later efforts to find this population (circa 2004) were not successful.
Linked photo shows the hairy flower stem, indicating this is brevifolia, not the similar capillaris, which is said to have glabrous flower stem.

Description
Many flowering spathes located on raised moss mounds in a wetland area. On this day, no scent was detected, perhaps because it was in the low 30sF.
