A few Small hairs on margins, per Tom Carlberg, who also said that this wasn't a good example
On fallen twig underneath an Oak tree.
Prior comment from Tom Carlberg..."There's three common species of Ramalina in California that have apothecia: R. leptocarpha, R. puberulenta, R. menziesii. The second is minutely hairy, the last forms nets, and the first is in your photo. There's also R. dilacerata, but it's not known (yet) from the Bay Area. It has main branches that are partially hollow." So R. puberulenta because of the minute hairs, right?

This is definitely a tentative ID b/c this doesn't look much like the N. cephalota I saw at Knowland Park earlier in the year. The soredia aren't all that blue, for one thing, and there's all this dark pigmentation. This lichen was coating branches of Monterey cypress.

Largest, most beautiful and strange N. cephalota thallus I’ve seen; on wood, bare cypress & baccharis branches. Longest single branch approximately 8+cm long, will return to measure. Massive gray soredia at elbows, branch split points, and ends. Black fungus on this as well as surrounding specimens of this species, in addition to the only specimen found on rocks below Cliff House.
