Description
A number of individuals found at surface near shore 10 August; only one successfully captured with a plankton net. Released 12 August along with other fish in temporary habitat. I found this species on the surface, where they held their pelvic fins to each side, the black band on each appearing detached from the body, and often swam in very tight circles. In the tank, the fish perched on or near the bottom as in these photos, usually in a sheltered location, lunging forward to capture nearby plankton during feeding times. I saw it swim to the surface to catch prey only one or two times during its captivity.

Note large size; black facial "mask"; white nose and ears. I was thrilled to finally find this elusive squirrel of the southeastern pine forests. It's heavily prized among hunters as a taxidermy mount. I am not sure if their numbers are stable or not.

Description
intersex-plumaged mallard. This individual has been here since last year but I've finally been able to get good photos.
Observations of this individual have yielded no attempted breeding behavior, as well as a lack of food and territorial (perching/sleeping spot) aggression.

A beautifully ornate male banded sunfish caught at Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. This individual resembles the closely related bluespotted sunfish, but the vertical bands are visible upon closer inspection. Bluespotted sunfish also lack the streaks of color on the face - instead being covered in blue spots.
