Description
Growing on top of Chimney Rock itself. These pines have serotinous cones that stay attached to the tree. This one grows on an exposed rocky cliff where the winter weather, predominantly blowing from west to east in NC, produces branches longer on one side than the other. Trees with this shape are known as "flag trees". I was there on a field trip for park rangers. I took the picture after they made me climb over 500 steps to the top (I have a bad back and asthma)......then they informed me that we could take the elevator down.
