'Tis fun to scare people walking around like this.
This grasshopper, I noticed, had its inner leg a lot lighter blue than normal, in fact rather greenish. If I catch it again I will get a picture of the leg. It had escaped in the house somewhere - hopefully I'll find it before it gets harmed by my mother or dog.
I would guess this grasshopper was Arphia simplex, which I have seen commonly around the area. However, it caught my eye because it flew slightly differently. I caught it and it looked like the spur on the wing was shorter than normal.
This grasshopper's front leg was amputated, apparently.
Defense posturing and calling. Consider the audio, yes it is actual audio, a try not to laugh challenge.
Originally located the raccoons up in a large white pine. In the recording you can hear chattering of the kits and the deeper vocalizations of the female, responding to my approach. The kits were higher up in the tree, above the female in the image. I revisited in the evening and found the female had moved the kits to a nearby hemlock and they were all together in what appeared to be an abandoned nest of some kind, possibly an old squirrel nest. One of the kits was on the forest floor, possibly left behind in the transition from one tree to another.
Makgadikgadi Saline Grassland (thorn bush savanna)
Please note, this young Platypus had swam over and sat on my wading boot. I had wriggled my foot several times in order to try and make it move but it just sat there. So in the end I picked it up, got a photo, and safely placed it in the creek.
