Hot Dots - Arthonia kermesina
Author: R.C. Harris, E. Tripp & Lendemer
Also listed as: Coniarthonia kermesina (R.C. Harris, E. Tripp & Lendemer) Aptroot & Ertz
Joseph (one of trip leaders) tells us the lichen body is inside the bark of the red spruce (Picea rubens). Only fungal reproductive structures are visible. This lichen is only known from a few locations in the Great Smokies and also in the Black Mountain (North Carolina) area.

Tentative, given scarcity in region; in cool, shaded rocky outcrop. Noted tiny tiny petals (often looking more like 8-10 even tinier petals), weak and leaning habit, and relatively long and slender leaves for a Stellaria

This is a very rare fern in South Carolina and elsewhere in the southeast. It was common here in a centipede grass lawn, the fronds about to wither away for the year. Sardis Church Cemetery, north side of SC 92 opposite Stomp Springs Rd., 10.3 km ENE of Joanna, Laurens County, South Carolina
