First walk after the shift to Level 3, and this karearea flew up the ridge to settle on the stump in front of the top seat and check me out for a minute or two. One of two.

So excited to spot this beauty swoop over our heads in the back yard with a smaller bird in its talons. The N.Z Falcon/Kārearea perched up in the Acacia tree and had breakfast. Fantastic to have them in The Brook and so close to the City!

Description
20 meters behind Gouland downs Hut on the Heaphy Track in amongst the forestry and tree.
I saw the bird matching the pictures in the Heaphy Track huts. Didn’t think anything of it at the time other than it was a bit different. Didn’t hear it’s all but it was hoping along low branches and the forest floor.
The bird was dark blue in colour and had an orange thingo under its beak.
While standing I’d estimate that the bird was roughly a foot and quarter or a foot and a half tall. Just a rough estimate.
Encounter was quite brief - only about 10 seconds so I didn’t really notice too much activity. It just flew onto a branch, did a couple of hops along a couple of branches and flew away again. The bird was roughly 15 meters away.
