This is a naturally occurring black spruce growing in a bog, this species is probably one of the rarest trees that you can find in mid-Michigan due to the fact that it only grows in a few bogs this far south. In fact, the nearest native population of black spruces that I know of is the Munith black spruce bog which is the southernmost of its kind in the state. I believe this land is privately owned
This was growing in a patch of goldenrods and asters that was between a walking path and a flooded ditch-like area. There were no other specimens in the area. This is not an arboretum or an official nature park and as far as I can tell nothing here was planted on purpose. This may have been introduced to the area somehow.
These are well known old growth white cedar trees on South Manitou Island
