Description
Caloboletus inedulis in Anne Arundel county Maryland in soil and mowed grass under a swamp-type oak (oval leaf with tiny spines at the end of veins, see photo #1) near a parking lot.
Cap is pale brown, split at edges, probably from dry conditions. Pores dull olive yellow, staining immediately. stipe thick, often tapered toward bottom, and pinched at the base. Stipe surface with red, brown, or indistinct reticulation in mid section, some yellow reticulation near top. Whitish or yellowish basal mycelium.
When sectioned or at splits, context is whitish or creamy yellow. context beneath cap (and sometimes the stipe) are slowly pink. Context of majority of cap and stipe is quickly blue becoming gray then brown. Note very dark blue stain on cross-section of stipe. Context is unusually solid and bug free. Very mild mushroomy smell, maybe with a bit of sourness. Mild taste. Bitterness not noted.
