I'm really leaning hybrid on this fish. The reddish eye and orangish spots/colouration in the dorsal and anal fins, as well as the opercular flap looking to be inbetween those of Northern Sunfish and Pumpkinseed, are what have me thinking it. @koaw @scottgibson @uconnbirdfish

Juvenile(s) feeding on sap from pre-dug holes. At one point one hung motionless for about 5 minutes as if dead with its mouth agape and wings spread (see photos 4 & 6). There are numerous accounts on the Internet of Sapsuckers getting drunk from fermented sap to the point of falling out of a tree or allowing themselves to be picked up. Most of these accounts are anecdotal. Does anyone out there have insight on this?
