Last winter I found dozens of "trails" on top of several inches of snow. See additional photos. Each was several inches long, and was wavy or circular. And at the end of every single trail was one of these. This covered at least 100 sqft, and was on a gentle slope leading down to a stream. There were not directly under a tree canopy. It was a sunny day when they showed up. I've asked several people, and the general consensus is that they blew up from around the stream and melted these little trails in the sunlight. Note that the trails go in all directions, the didn't melt "downhill" or in any apparent pattern. The photos don't do it justice. It was stunning to see.
