Description
I have to admit, the Mountain Beaver is an animal I have wanted to see for many years, but chalked it up there with Spotted Bat and Pygmy Sperm Whale in that I know they are out there, but the odds of me finding one are......
So, I was more than delighted to have been able to spend a good 15 minutes watching this one at close range as it repeatedly carried mouthfuls of dry grass and green conifer twigs to its burrow under the snow.

Incredible experience. Long-tailed weasel had her babies 3 or 4 days ago. Today she moved them from 1 hole to another about 100 feet away that was more secluded. She made 6 trips to carry 8 babies. Twice she carried 2 at a time. She was so gentle. Unbelievable that I got to witness this.

Description
Japanese name: Koyamaki, コウヤマキ, 高野槙.
Next to the main hall of Saimyo Temple 西明寺 at Mashiko 益子.
As I roughly understand from the sign below the tree, it is 30 mt. high, circumference: 4.5 mt, branches extension: 12 mt.
It is said that in the third year of the Jougen Era (1209), the Emperor Tsuchimikado planted this tree as a memorial in the occasion of the restoration of the main hall of the temple. The koyamaki takes its name from Mount Koya, in the Kii Peninsula, where this tree abounds. As in the Kanto region this kind of huge tree is rather rare, in the 29 year of the Showa Era (1954) this tree has been designated as a prefecture natural monument.
