Forming extensive light green turf among bare ground and gravel, in urban area.
I have observed this moss at this location for over 10 years, and have never seen capsules produced. Stems ca. 5 mm long. Leaves parallel sided, recurved in lower 1/3, papillate. Nerve with elongate cells, apex slightly excurrent.
Associated with Ceratodon purpureus.
Appears to be a rarely collected species in Australia, with only 7 collections shown for Australia in AVH.

Growing intermixed with Fissidens megalotis in otherwise-bare silt in the middle of a minor footpath through Eucalyptus cypellocarpa damp forest. I didn't find any fertile plants.
The leaves are 0.3–0.4 mm long (chord length from insertion to apex).
For reasons I don't understand, iNat's taxonomy doesn't include Fissidens bifrons, even though it's common and accepted under this name by the ALA, MEL and in AusMoss. iNat insists on substituting F. pygmaeus, which is a synonym for F. taylorii – quite a different species.
