Description
Sandy soil
First I thought it's a Desert Shaggymae. After I pulled it out from the ground, I noticed it didn't have any gills, it looks like a puffball with stem.
I spotted this funky looking mushroom near Rio Grande River, under sagebrushes.

IDd by Richard Tehan. Further collection, documentation and ID pending. All growing from soil and immediately adjacent to wood. Extremely difficult to excavate the host, the first three broke against the wood, seemly indicating that the host was in or under the wood.

Monarda fistulosa is also present in the old fields at Spring Creek Preserve, but my memory is the Monarda serotina was only in alluvial areas along the creek.
