Description
Smooth sumac with some crazy growth at the top. I think these pinkish structures are distorted tiny leaves. Is this caused by a pathogen or parasite of some sort?
The lower leaves look fairly normal, but the highest leaves have strange forms with leaflets conjoined and some negative curvature.

Original observation: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/66309947
Outer shells have started breaking away from the gall like a Transformer. The insides have softened after a rainstorm, and the larvae have started emerging. 2.5-3mm long. Multiple larvae in each gall.
