Description
Magnífico ejemplar juvenil (al parecer una hembra) de la rara y amenazada águila crestada (Spizaetus isidori). Posada en una rama al lado de su nido, vocalizando regularmente con silbidos. Al cabo de un rato, su madre (ver observación siguiente) llegó y le dejó una presa para que se alimentara. La joven ave ya vuela bien.
El nido está situado en una ladera empinada, sobre un árbol de yarumo (Cecropia). Estimo que el yarumo tiene una altura de 15-17 m, y que el nido se encuentra a unos 12-15 m de altura del suelo. El nido está construido con palos amontonados unos encima de otros y de lejos le estimo unas dimensiones aproximadas de 1m x 1m x 1m. Muchas de las ramas usadas para su construcción tienen plantas epífitas, algunas de las cuales han prosperado y seguido creciendo en el nido de la rapaz. Así, puedo identificar que sobre el nido crecen al menos 8 especies de epífitas; a saber: dos ericáceas (Cavendishia cf. bracteata, Sphyrospermum cf. buxifolium), dos especies de helechos (cf. Pleopeltis, cf. Terpsichore), una gesneriácea (Columnea sp.), una bromeliácea (Tillandisa/Racinaea), una orquídea (Rhetinantha cf. acuminata) y al parecer una asterácea o campanulácea sin identificar.

Female Yellow-eared Toucanet. Photographed at Rancho Plastico, Darién Province, Panama on 24 February 2019. What a wonderful bird! We got lucky with this obliging individual. Although lacking the yellow auricular streak characteristic of the male this is one superb toucan. Monotypic.
