Heard a thunk and first thought was "that sounds like a cuckoo". Not the first cuckoo, but the first to hit a window for the season. Currently recovering in a box.

Collected by my son and mum in a farm pond we constructed many years ago. I've seen little grey leeches there before, but not these awesome monsters. Amazing how they swim like snakes.
Unless we have other similar species, I'm guessing this is our 'tiger' leech, Richardsonianus mauianus.
When it has finished feeding and given my hand back I'll try for some more natural shots (getting a bit tired of waiting).

A massive grove, and various individual plants, beneath windbreak pines on Tiwai near the smelter. Also A. appendiculatum, A. obtusatum, A. lyalli, A. flaccidum and A. gracilimen and a few apparent hybrids in among them. Perhaps likely to have colonized from nearby Bluff, with the pines providing excellent shelter and a soil type that they wouldn't normally find on Tiwai (same with the likes of Dicksonia squarrosa and Romhora adiantifolia in the same area).
