Very long (about 1.5m) kelp. Root like holdfast still attached to a rock.
Some other small ulva species also attached.
Very large (about 2m long) alaria found in the ocean at low tide. Holdfast was still attached to a rock and along with lots of ulva.
Very large (invasive) sargassum found in the ocean at low tide. Many others found nearby.
Found washed up with no other nereocysts around. The holdfast was completely gone so I think it may have been ripped/eaten and dislodged.
The blades were very patchy, so I think it’s possible it may have been reproductive although I couldn’t find any clear sori.
Epiphytic and growing off of a dislodged piece of Zostera. Found in tidal pool. Many similar pieces nearby.
Found buried under ulva near tideline.
Root-like holdfasts of multiple solitary blades are attached to a single rock.
Each blade has two rows of bullations running down the middle.
Found near tideline. Very decayed/damaged. Root-like holdfast no longer attached to anything. Seems to have some ulva and rhodophyta species tangled in it.
Although heavily damaged, the remaining blade near the stipe shows the 5 midribs that are characteristic of costaria costata.
Discoloured seaweed that appears to be washed up Desmarestia.
I think it is herbacea due to the ligulate blades that are more than 1 cm wide.
Found dislodged in mid-intertidal zone at Saratoga Beach
Lots of Leathesia marina found growing at the mouth of the black creek estuary at low tide.
Unknown Chondracanthus species with multiple blades, papillae with papillae that do not appear to have egg clusters.
Found at low tide growing on a piece of rope with many other seaweed species.
Found in the water at high tide. Was floating unattached to anything.
Large size and flat blades are characteristic of Desmarestia herbacea.
Found washed up on shore. Cylindrical branches taper at tips and basally.
Found washed up on shore detached from holdfast.
Main blade is about 5cm wide.
