Found in the grass near a reservoir.
There were hundreds of these in shallow submerged vegetation on the edge of a reservoir. They made a squeaking sound and jumped into the water when I got within 20 feet of them.
A black-backed gull. Orange-tipped beak and darker tail feathers. Pale legs and larger size make me think it’s a Larus marinus specifically, but I’m not good with bird identification and am open to correction.
