This small cormorant has many names. In New Zealand it is also called the little shag or, in the case of this white-throated morph, white-throated shag. In Australia it is known as the little pied cormorant.
There are two other morphs in New Zealand. One has a full white breast whilst the other has no white at all.
It was photographed in a nesting colony on the shore of Lake Rotorua.

This large, colourful rail is found in several countries in the far east- including Australia - where it is known as the purple swamp hen or Australasian swamp hen. There is a very similar bird (P. porphyrio) found in southern Europe.
This one is from New Zealand where it is known by its Maori name - Pukeko. It was one of a large group including chicks that were wandering around a car park next to Lake Rotorua.
