Umbrella Thorn (Afrikaans: Haak-en-steek) trees have been found in various locations south of the Orange River, some as single individuals and others in large populations between Three Sisters, Beaufort West, Merweville and Prince Albert.
This specific individual grows on an eastern slope of a koppie overlooking the Gamka River. The area around the tree was scattered with a profusion of seed pods. With further investigation others may very well be found in the vicinity among the Gamka River thornveld.
