Poor photos sorry. was on a dying Mahoe (can't be certain of the tree species but pretty sure it was Mahoe). looks like a fungus, initially inside the bark but breaking out like pustules, bright orange in colour. Fairly soft and very moist (had been raining). broke apart like wet cake when handled.

Eruptions through the bark, some with a sort of crystaline look to the fibre. One photo has a kaka damage strip, but there is an eruption below it on the side of the trunk.

2 chicks, about a week old. Low quality pics as it was getting dark. Built a rudimentary shelter for the chicks with a few logs, hope they make it. Parents around chasing BBGs.
