Common shrub to about 4dm tall.
Habitat: level area with fairly sparse trees (mostly ponderosa pine) and more dense low shrubs. Other plants: low sagebrush, antelope bitterbrush, grasses, etc.

2 shrubs growing in roadside field. Shrubs are 1m tall, including inflorescence.
Habitat: open field composed of mostly sedges and grasses, surrounded by ponderosa pine, Douglas-fir and aspen.
Locally abundant shrub, 9dm tall (including inflorescence). Bark is grey and slightly shredding.
Habitat: open are on rocky, south-facing slope along ridgeline surrounded by forest. Other plants include sedges, grasses, penstemon, phlox, yarrow and scattered whitebark pine and subalpine fir.
