Bugguide suggested Papaipema. Leps host plant database did not list Verbesina for any of the genus. However, I found this which mentions Papaipema cataphracta found on Verbesina alternifolia (twice):

An extremely long delay in pupation. The caterpillar looked ill/nearly dead for many weeks (see 6th photo).
