Found under mature Doug firs on a ~35° north-facing slope, underneath substantial lichen and moss coverage. Suspecting X. atropurpureus...? Tasty when sauteéd, but reportedly bitter around the edge of the caps.
I literally thought this was a piece of toast from a distance.
Smelled like anise, delicate, kind of sticky. Cap diameter approx. 6cm., took a bit of a beating in the rainstorm.
