Appearance:
This birch polypore was massive relative to the other fungi we encountered in Waterfowl Park. It featured a cracked white-brown top layer and a smooth white underside.
Behavior:
Birch polypore's typically feed through decomposition, primarily breaking down the wood of birch trees. This particular specimen was found growing between a pair of birch trees and has likely been there for a significant amount of time, given its relative size.
Interactions:
Birch polypore's are known as heterotrophic decomposers, returning nutrients to the ecosystem. This process is critical in the nutrient cycling process within Waterfowl Park.
