I have qualifications in ornithology and have been a long time volunteer with Birdlife Australia. My knowledge of plants was limited, and mostly had been acquired in Queensland. When we made the move to Mallacoota, surrounded by Croajingolong National Park, the abundant plant life was impossible to resist. My partner and I set out to learn the local plants, a recreatuional pursuit that became a bit of an obsession in the wake of the 2019-2020 bushfires that raged through our forests. The iNaturalist community has been of great assistance, particularly when we've needed to sort out difficult to distinguish species in families such as the Pomaderris.
