The exact number of coyotes living in the Bay Area is unknown as the California Department of Fish and Wildlife doesn't monitor the state's population. But biologists know the number of coyotes began inching up in the 1970s, when mass poisoning by ranchers and government agencies to protect livestock tailed off.
