Heard only, calling. This is not a rare bird for central Texas, but it is rare for my neighborhood. We usually only see a few during spring and fall migrations.
Calling by pond on Lake Creek Trail
I was excited to find this dragonfly. It's a new species for me and I'd never seen a dragonfly with such completely dark wings. When I saw it in better light I was amazed by the vertical stripes in its eyes.
Looks like it has a metal face plate!
In late summer and early fall a few immature Tricolored Herons always wander inland and can be found on creeks and rivers. They have appeared on Lake Creek in past summers. This was the first one I've seen here this summer.
This was the most common species of dragonfly on the trail this morning. This species is a flier rather than a percher, so most were constantly flying around. I was excited to finally see one perch and get a few closeup shots.
This guy was perched at the very top of a tree (thus the low-res photo). It looks like he's missing a front wing!
