On Saturday, Dec. 15, volunteers will fan out across Carpinteria for the annual Audubon Society Christmas Bird Count. The initial bird count was held on Christmas Day in 1900, when ornithologist Frank M. Chapman proposed a new holiday tradition—a “Christmas Bird Census” in which townspeople would count birds during the holidays rather than hunt them.
