Dragonflies and Damselflies are in full swing on my neighborhood creek. I didn't realize how much I'd missed them since last summer until I went out on April 2 a few days ago to start a Pond Watch and returned on April 11 (yesterday). I documented 15 species of odonates and 3 of those were lifers! I encourage anyone to read about the Migratory Dragonfly Partnership citizen science projects and get involved. Pond Watch is easy and fun once you learn how to identify the 5 species that the project tracks. And there are so many others to learn and observe as well! Attached are my odonate observations from those two days.
If I'm correct identifying this as a Great Pondhawk, it would be a lifer dragonfly for me!
I never knew about the two diagonal stripes on the thorax, yellow on the bottom, white on top.
