3-year-old child attacked by mountain lion in Southern California.
LAKE FOREST, Calif. – Authorities killed a mountain lion after it attacked and injured a 3-year-old child at a Southern California park Monday afternoon, Jan. 20, officials said.
I am glad the child was saved! Sadly, I think small children are seen as prey by any Mountain Lion. I remember visitng the Wildlife Waystation, in Southern California, with my 11-year-old son years ago, and a female Mountain Lion in an enclosure there could not take her eyes off my son (who was over 5 feet tall at the time). Every time we moved, she moved, trying to get closer to him....I was glad she was in the enclosure! I thought back on all the times we had hiked in Mountain Lion habitat....we always told the kids to stay within eyesight, and I wonder now if that's enough. I hope people keep their children close when hiking!
I've heard that children and smaller women are viewed as prey by mountain lions. There was a spate of attacks on and women joggers, children, and women hikers in the 90s in San Diego County.
Yes, the first known death from a Mountain Lion attack was at Rancho Cuyamaca State Park back in the 90's. A close friend of mine worked there at the time, and the Mountain Lion was well-known to the park staff. The woman who was killed was a bird watcher, and they believe she tried to fight back. Since then, there have been numerous attacks on the West Coast....even at least one attack on a cyclist!
